Peter started his first business in early 2006 servicing Xerox machines in the Ex-lease market. With the guidance and help of his good friend and mentor, his copier repair business enjoyed 3 years of incredible growth and got to the point where he couldn’t take on any new business. This is when he noticed the problem with his business model.
His income was controlled by time and space. If he wasn’t physically in front of a machine servicing, he didn’t get paid. To get paid more he had to work more.
He turned to the internet for answers and spent the next 3 years trying to figure out the whole online thing. This was early 2009.
The economy had already taken a turn for the worse. The people who sent new clients Peter’s way had long since stopped because he was too busy.
With no lead generation systems in place, no new work coming in and his existing clients calling less and less because they were also hit by the GFC, his copier business started drying up.
Jumping from one shiny online thing to the next he ended up doing too many things at once and at the end of 2011 the whole lot came crashing down. No money coming in from copiers or the internet he had to get a j-o-b just to pay the bills.
In that job he was hauling fish and ice for $21 an hour 12 hours a day 6 days a week. On one occasion emptying out fish guts from a drain by hand while a 16 year old kid gave him instructions.
Humbling, humiliating and a gift all at the same time. He HAD to start again. After looking at EVERYTHING he’d ever done in business over those last 6 years, he asked himself, what worked, what didn’t work, why did it work or not work and he made a plan.
Peter picked the 1 thing he loved to do the most out of everything he’d done. He started interviewing successful business owners about how they became successful and shared those interviews online.
It evolved into The Peter Montgomery Show…
